How do you choose a processor? What is the difference between intel and AMD?

When buying a computer, great attention should be paid to the choice of processor. The processor is the most important of all computer components. This device is the main and main component that determines the performance and speed of your PC. The choice of other devices for the computer will depend entirely on the selected processor.

Before choosing a processor, you must first clearly define what your future personal computer
will be used for. The goals can be very diverse: working with office programs, using the Internet, watching movies, listening to music, using Photoshop, editing videos, or participating in the most advanced and exciting online games. It is also possible that over time you will change your hobbies or want to do everything at once. Then first you need to figure out which processors cope with these or those tasks.

What is a processor ?

The processor (CPU - Central Processing Unit) is the most important component of the PC. The device performs various logical and arithmetic operations that are set by programs. Also, it is the processor that holds control over the rest of the computer.

A device such as a processor is a rectangular plate made of crystalline silicon. The microcircuit is placed in a plastic or ceramic case.

Processor types differ from each other in different characteristics: clock speed, performance, cache size, bit width (the main ones are 32- and 64-bit), and slot specification.

The clock speed determines the number of clock cycles (or simplest operations) that the processor performs per second. The units are gigahertz (GHz). The clock frequency is divided into internal and external. The internal frequency is responsible for the operation of most of the electronic circuits inside the processor, while the external frequency is used to ensure that the processor and the motherboard communicate.

Time passes and processor slots change with it. Therefore, you need to pay great attention to the compatibility of the sockets of the purchased processor and those on the motherboard.

Which AMD or Intel processor should you choose?

At the moment, the most popular and most well-grounded in the market are two platforms or two types of processors, which are Intel and AMD. Both brands have a reputation for making reliable, quality PC hardware. Many users choose one or another brand based on personal preferences, everyone has their own choice. However, it is worth paying attention to the fact that whatever processor you choose, the components of your computer must be compatible with this processor.

There are many controversial claims, one of which is the opinion that the Intel processor is slightly faster than AMD. However, one cannot fully agree or completely refute this expressed idea. Intel's top-end Core i7 processors do have better performance than AMD's Phenom II at this point, but should you pay attention to the price? The difference in the performance of these processors does not exceed 5-10%, but this will have to be spent much more. If we pay attention to processors with an initial and intermediate level of complexity, then we can without a doubt say that AMD processors are in no way inferior to Intel, and at the same time they are cheaper, therefore they are often installed on laptops.

There is also a claim that modern games require a 4-core processor. This idea becomes true only if the computer is bought by a true gamer who is ready to purchase a high-performance video card (GeForce GTX 570 or Radeon HD 5870), which costs an average of $ 350. If the future PC user buys more common video cards, such as the GeForce GTS 450 or Radeon HD 5770, a regular 2-core processor can do the job. If you think about the platform, it is difficult to give preference to someone from AMD and Intel, since both companies are good in their way and offer different solutions. However, it should be noted that Intel platforms are much more expensive, because for the price of a 3-4-core Phenom II processor from AMD, a user will not be able to buy even a 4-core Intel Core i3, and there can be no question of purchasing a Core i7.

What tasks do you set for the computer? Or which processor to choose in 2021?

If your future PC will serve as a home computer with a universal purpose, then a 2-core processor with average power and an average price is perfect for this case. Now, to successfully play video in Full HD (1920x1080) resolution, one core in the processor is no longer enough, and setting up decoration using a graphics editor or video card requires a lot of effort and time. This processor will perform the same functions and tasks as other, more powerful processors, the only difference will be in the execution time. AMD Athlon II is quite suitable here.

Is your future computer designed for professional programming, graphics, and video processing? Then you can't save! You will constantly improve in your endeavors and at the same time, you will inevitably face a shortage of computer performance. In this case, the Intel Core i7 is quite appropriate, albeit at a high cost.

Thus, for a PC that is intended for use in the office or for the sake of the Internet, any modern and inexpensive processor, which costs $ 26-39, will be an excellent solution. These processors include, for example, Intel (Pentium Dual-Core) and AMD (Phenon II X2).

If your universal home PC is designed for computer games, then the optimal solution would be to purchase a 2-core processor with a clock speed of 3 GHz. Why not 3 or 4 nuclear? The bottom line is that very few games are capable of using all the resources provided by such processors. Consequently, a 2-core processor with the highest possible clock speed will significantly save money on buying the right processor. Processors for such purposes are in the region of $ 53 - $ 66: Intel Core i3 5xx, AMD Phenom II X2 5xx, Core i5 6xx.

Are you looking for the most modern and advanced games for the future? Then a 4-core processor is ideal for you, the price of which ranges from $ 92. up to $ 132. ... These processors include Intel Core i5 750, i7 860, or, for example, AMD Phenom II X4 94x and 95x. For games, there is no need to put a 6-core processor at once, it is much better to choose a powerful video card, or two that will work in pairs.

If you work as an engineer, professional photographer, or videographer, then a very powerful 6-core processor will come in handy! Process photos and videos, work with three-dimensional graphics, with AutoCAD and ArchiCAD programs, with scientific calculations, you will be helped by a processor that should work efficiently and have maximum dedication. The price for such processors is from $ 119 to $ 199.
